/ Introduction /
St. Vitus Cathedral is among the most visited landmarks in the Czech Republic. The goal of this project was a comprehensive modernization of its web presence — from information architecture and visual identity to implementation. The result is a new digital identity that respects the cathedral's thousand-year history while serving the needs of today's visitors.

Period of implementation: 2023 (may - dec)

St. Vitus Cathedral remains an important symbol of the Czech nation and a major tourist attraction, drawing visitors from all over the world. It ranks among the most visited tourist destinations in the Czech Republic, with approximately 1.5 million people touring its interior each year.

The previous website was built when web standards were significantly different from today's — incremental updates over the years did not keep pace with how visitor behavior online has evolved. The site lacked mobile support, visitors had to look for key information (opening hours, service schedules, ticket prices) across multiple pages, and overall navigation didn't match what a typical user expects. The project required a comprehensive approach — rethinking how the website should serve both tourists and the faithful, while connecting that with a visual presence that reflects the significance of the institution.
Together with our partners (Petr Sýkora, Terezia Melišková, webotvurci.cz), we delivered a comprehensive redesign: • Content review — thorough simplification of the site, merging duplicate sections, and moving part of the content into a blog format for ongoing publication • International benchmarking — analysis of cathedral websites worldwide as a reference for tone and visual language • New site map — clearly separated sections for tourists, events, services, and other key areas • Visual identity — new logo, color palette, typography, and UI components — usable across social media and future outdoor communication • Template system in the CMS — predefined layouts for info pages, articles, and timelines • WordPress CMS — simple and fast content management for the client, without dependency on a developer
Technologies used

The primary challenge was working with a historically and culturally significant landmark — the outcome couldn't compete with the building itself; it had to coexist quietly. The second was an extensive content review across dozens of pages and the decisions about how to restructure that content so it remained complete yet clearer. The third was building a visual identity from the ground up — defining a logo, color palette, and typography that would represent the institution with dignity across all communication channels.
Today, visitors can reach any information in at most two clicks. The homepage shows the day's schedule and practical information immediately on load. The visual identity is restrained, original, and complements the building without competing for attention. Previous content now serves as a rich source for regularly published articles. The client received a unified digital identity used across all communication channels. The website is live at www.katedralasvatehovita.cz.
